The Black Hills have been a gathering place for Harley riders, Corvette lovers, Impala fans and other groups whose interests transportation of the cooler kind.
Organizers of the fourth annual Black Hills Overdrive in early June have combined all those interests into a single, all-car rally for car lovers of ‘57 Chevs, vintage ‘34 Ford hot rods, Studebakers and Hot Rod Lincolns.
Black Hills Overdrive is sort of a Woodstock for car lovers. The event draws car lovers and their cars from all over the region.
The early bird event begins the evening of Thursday, June 5, at the Fort Hayes museum and chuckwagon dinner site south of Rapid City. Beginning early on Friday, June 6, four car rides — organized by the Counts Car Club — will wind through the Hills.
Friday, June 7, will feature two car shows, one in Hill City and the other at Bear Country USA near Rapid City. In the evening, car owners can join Rapid City’s Cruiser Night, an annual car event that takes place on Mount Rushmore Road, Rapid City’s longtime cruising strip.
On Saturday, June 8, Black Hills Overdrive will stage its big finale at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Participants will have a chance to photograph their cars with Mount Rushmore serving as a backdrop, said Craig Pugsley of Custer State Park, one of the event’s organizers.
It’s no surprise that car and motorcycle enthusiasts have flocked to the Black Hills for years. This is not your ordinary roadside attraction. The smooth, winding roads through the pine-covered Hills offer great scenery and relaxed driving. Historic places — after all, old car buffs have a built-interest in history — such as Deadwood are also a draw. And you don’t have to go far to find a place to pull over to have lunch or take photos.
