Bike Cruise in the Hills for Two

by Dustin
My wife and her bike in our neighborhood in the Black Hills, just before we head down a rural road into the forest.

The weather was beautiful in the Black Hills yesterday, so my wife and I went for a bike ride. We bought some mountain bikes a few weeks ago - my grand scheme for getting into shape a little bit - and we hadn't gotten a chance to use them yet. It was really a lot of fun. I haven't ridden a bicycle since college, and I was pleased to learn I hadn't forgotten.

On the other hand, I discovered that I'm horribly out of shape. We'd barely gone a couple blocks before I needed a rest. I make myself feel better by noting it was uphill, but it wasn't exactly Ben Nevis or anything. I claimed I needed a picture break, so I snapped this shot of my gorgeous gal being cute on her set of wheels. I think she was busy feeling bad about my huffing and puffing.

Getting to the Black Hills from Europe

by Dustin
Mount Rushmore, Black Hills, South Dakota

As far as Europeans are concerned, the United States are on sale right now. With the Euro at an all-time high against the US Dollar, it's a very good time to plan an American holiday if you're living on the Continent. A bit like an after-Christmas clearance, maybe.

The Black Hills, of course, are a pretty attractive destination for Europeans. The open spaces, the wildlife, the mountains, American Indian culture... all sound like pretty relaxing options, especially if you're coming from the crowded streets of London or Amsterdam. And even if you put the exchange rate aside, South Dakota is a pretty inexpensive vacation. That's part of the reason why overseas visits to the U.S. were up 7% last year. Western Europe was particularly to blame, so a big merci bien to the French, Spanish, Belgians and - yes - the Liechtensteiners.

Black Hills Good Place to Photograph Lunar Eclipse

by Dustin
Lunar eclipse photo from a telescope in Deadwood in the Black Hills of South Dakota - February 20/21, 2008

One of the things I really like about the Black Hills is how clear the night sky is. There are several reasons that the stars come through so brightly:

  1. Little air pollution. The air quality in the Black Hills and Badlands is incredibly good (check out these DENR air quality graphs from downtown Rapid City - downtown!).

Black Hills Have ‘Best Snow in 12 Years’

by Dustin
Snowmobilers on a cliff overlooking the forest in the Black Hills - from South Dakota Tourism

The Black Hills average about 150 inches of snow a year, but according to the ski slopes and lodges in the higher elevations, there's already been 156 inches of the white stuff since the end of October.

Pete Torino at Deer Mountain Ski Resort talked to the Black Hills Pioneer on Tuesday about the good news. "It's about two or three times every week we get 4 to 8 inches or more," he told the newspaper. Conditions at Terry Peak Ski Area, just next door and at a slightly higher elevation, are even a little better. They're reporting a 32-inch average maximum base on their website.
