One of the best places to see the night sky is Badlands National Park. Not only are there no city lights to obscure the glow of the stars, but there aren’t any trees to narrow the visual range.

I remember sleeping outside in the Badlands as a youngster and seeing for the first time a satellite make its way from north to south along the amazing dome of star-filled darkness.

This summer, Badlands National Park is getting serious about its night sky.

Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening beginning at 9 p.m. at the amphitheater near the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, visitors will be able to hear a presentation from a park ranger and view the night sky through a large telescope.

Another new summer program this year is a Tipi Village located between the Cedar Pass Lodge and the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. Native American cultural programs will be presented and traditional Lakota arts and crafts will be for sale at the village.

In addition, ranger-led geology and prairie walks, fossil talks and Junior Ranger programs will also be presented daily through Labor Day.

For more information, check out the Badlands National Park website or call (605) 433-5241.
