From the campus classic to the nationally recognized, there's never been a better time to feed into your biggest, beefiest burger craving in the Black Hills!

#1. Black Hills Burger & Bun Company -- Custer, SD

burger11

Taken from the restaurant review of Black Hills Burger & Bun Co. we featured in March, when you have people as passionate about good food as Claude and Christie Smith are, you won’t find an ordinary burger menu that only offers burgers with or without cheese. Crafted using beef that’s ground daily and served atop house-baked buns, this Black Hills eatery serves up blissful burgers from an inventive menu, including “The Hot Granny” – a perfectly cooked beef or bison patty topped with bacon, cream cheese, and sweet and spicy jalapeño sauce.

Currently they offer eight meat burgers, two vegetarian burgers and a Burger of the Week. The vegetarian burgers are whimsically called “The Lousy Hunter,” and “The Loaded Hunter.” Want a little extra? Then just “sasquatch it” and get two patties on any of their signature burgers. Burgers are also available in buffalo for an authentic South Dakota flavor.

Thanks to strong accolades and customer reviews on TripAdvisor, they've recently been named the "Best Burger in the Nation" - so getting your hands on one of their burgers just became a bit more difficult. Get there early and prepare for a wait. You won't be disappointed!

#2. Lewie's Burgers & Brews -- Lead, SD

Looking for a great place to eat in Lead? Any burger aficionado who is in the Northern Hills MUST stop at Lewie's and try a burger. The burgers are huge, juicy, and there are tons of choices for toppings. The bacon cheeseburger is always a fan favorite. The onion rings, cheeseballs and fries are amazing too!

There are a mix of customers at Lewies... bikers, locals, tourists and families. All are welcome, the service is excellent, and the prices are great. In the summertime, opt for their patio seating - it's a great way to enjoy the beautiful Black Hills while indulging in a delicious burger. In winter, it's the place to refuel after hitting the slopes and trails. The atmosphere inside is fun - the walls are covered with interesting memorabilia and plenty of HDTVs.

This great burger joint is located on the south side of Lead on US Highway 85.

#3. Sugar Shack -- near Deadwood, SD

The Sugar Shack claims to have the best burgers in the Black Hills - but you'd better come hungry: the burgers are ½ pound of beef. Their massive burgers are sweet, with cheese melted on top. Their patties are wide rather than thick; they stick out over the edge of the bun all the way around so that you never have to take a bite of bread without meat.  The Bubba Burger is the highlight of the menu - with bacon, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, jalapenos and barbecue sauce - it's everything you could ever want on a burger!

The Sugar Shack is open year-round for the constant flow of regulars and tourists who are in the area to see Mount Rushmore or Crazy Horse. Fries are available for $1 and the sugar burger can become a deluxe for $0.75 more, which adds pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions.

The restaurant is a bit of a throwback diner; just 20 people can be seated at the mismatched tables, with another eight at the wooden, sloping bar - but it's full of a certain charm that's incredibly inviting. In the summer, crowds can spill over to the outside tables and enjoy their burgers with a Black Hills view.

#4. Dakotah Steakhouse -- Rapid City, SD

For a higher-end restaurant, it might surprise you to see Dakotah Steakhouse in our top 5 best burger list - but their burgers are strong contenders up against the traditional pub burgers that fill out the rest of the list.

Dakotah's burgers are a full half-pound of their custom ground and mixed beef, served on a Tuscan bun. The mouth-watering flavor stands alone and doesn't need any fancy toppings - "Justa Burger" is exactly that. Your mouth will be overly satisfied with the pure flavor from the burger alone.

If you are looking to doctor up your burger, "The Rodeo" is topped with cheddar cheese, apple smoked bacon and BBQ sauce - one of their most desirable entrees. Or take them up on the Burger of the Week; this week's burger featured poblano peppers, pepper jack cheese, avocado spread and tortilla strips.

Take another recommendation and kick-start your meal with their pheasant jalapeno poppers: To. Die. For.

#5. Lucky's 13 Pub -- Spearfish, SD

Visit with any Spearfish local on where to find the best burger and you're sure to hear "Lucky's 13" in unison. For a tried and true burger, this is where you want to come. The staff is great and the burgers are fantastic. Their menu includes a long list of signature burgers, including the "Juicy Lucy" - handstuffed with molten cheese!

Lucky's 13 Pub combines music, sports, nightly promos & specials with an extensive Americana menu. Warmth and good energy fill the restaurant day & night! They also boast the regions only Table Tender booths. These booths each have three selections of tap beer right at your fingertips. You drink and pay only for what you pour! For great burgers and beer, Lucky's 13 in Spearfish definitely makes the cut.
