Ahh the Christmas season is here again, which means bundling up, hot cocoa, the smell of fresh baked goodies, decorating the tree and of course sparkling lights!

For local residents, Storybook Island once again opens its gates for a winter wonderland spectacular!

Storybook Island has been a cornerstone of childhood memories for over 50 years in the Rapid City area. Through the summer months, Storybook Island is the perfect family activity to grab an ice cream and connect with their favorite storybook characters. During their Christmas Nights of Light, all of their displays are decorated with lights.

For my family and I, each year since moving to the Black Hills in 2007, we have found ourselves really getting into the Christmas spirit after an evening visit. I"m a family man and enjoy grabbing a hot cocoa to warm the kiddos hands and tummies.

This year the displays really stepped up their game, utilizing LED lights that really enhance the colored landscape. Our journey led us past the Three Little Pigs, Winnie the Pooh, Dorothy and her friends of OZ all the way up to the train station.

There are times we can visit Storybook and skip the train right, but this year no way.  The train experience was enhanced with a brightly decorated train and Christmas music. The kids rode in the caboose. From afar I could hear them shouting, "Merry Christmas!" to passer-bys. As they pulled up to the station I could see their smiling faces approach and before the door could fully open..."Santa Claus!"

We found our way to the front of the line and I was reassured by my daughter..."See told you Santa was real." How can I argue with her after such a lovely evening.
