Candy corn, crisp evenings, boots, sweaters, pumpkins, hay rides, changing leaves and corn mazes are just a few of the many things I love about fall. Once I see the candy corn and pumpkin flavored everything hit the grocery store shelves, I can’t fight the itch to find some fall fun. Recently, my family and I set out on a fall adventure. Our destination? The Spearfish Valley Produce Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch, located about three miles from Spearfish. This is a fall family event you can’t miss!

At the Spearfish Valley Produce Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch, the experience goes well beyond just getting lost in a maze and picking a pumpkin from the patch. They have various other family activities, including a corn box (picture a sand box, but better!), hay jump, rubber duck races, hay bales to climb and jump on, an inflatable horse race, hay ride and a farm store.

Our kids opted to take in the hay jump before we tackled the maze. They jumped off huge stacks of hay onto a mattress covered in even more hay. Then we raced rubber ducks for awhile until the corn maze beckoned us in. This year’s maze is an elaborate witch design. We had to find 6 stamp stations before exiting the maze in order for the kids to get a prize at the end. My husband was our lead navigator and if it weren’t for missing the first 3 stamp locations, we beat that maze like a boss (of course we back-tracked to get those stamps!) There’s something so rewarding in successfully navigating your way through the twists and turns of this maze. The kids were rewarded with candy and vampire fangs…I was rewarded with much needed family time and lots of laughs.

Before we left for the day, we took in the inflatable horse races and hay ride. We didn’t pick pumpkins this time because we have our hearts set on visiting some of the other fun Black Hills pumpkin patches before Halloween. These include Lil’ Harvester’s Pumpkin Patch and the Pumpkin Patch at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, both in Rapid City, and the pumpkin patch at the Allen Ranch in Hot Springs.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get lost! The Spearfish Valley Produce Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is open Fridays from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November 1. Closer to Halloween, the maze will become a haunted maze after dark! Click here to check out their Facebook for more information. Cost is $7 for adults (ages 13 and up), kids are $5 (age 4-12) and kids 3 and under are free. There is an additional cost for the haunted maze.

To get to this corn maze, take I-90 west from Rapid City to Exit 8, and turn right. Drive 2.5 miles to Chicken Creek Road. Turn left and go about a quarter mile. The corn maze will be on the left. (They don’t recommend you use your GPS to find the place, as not all devices display the location accurately.)
