With snowfall averages of over 200 inches per year, Lead, SD is the home of ski resorts Ski Mystic/Deer Mountain and Terry Peak Ski Resort, and miles and miles of snowmobile trails and cross-country skiing.

Taking place next weekend, February 25-27, 2016, the historic gold mining community of Lead will throw a three-day party they affectionately refer to as the Winterfest Snowbash! This weekend of fun includes many outdoor recreation activities, but also photo exhibits, community Princes and Princesses contest, a parade, fireworks, a huge bonfire, and more. We've outlined the full schedule of events below:

ALL WEEK:

SKI BENCHES – BEST PHOTO CONTEST: All Week / Main Street Lead
Stop at the Main Street ski benches and take a cool picture, then share it on social medias with the hastag #leadskibench – the coolest and most original picture will be awarded a prize!

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25th

SENIOR SLOPE-SIDE DAY: Starting at 9:00 AM / Stewart Lodge at Terry Peak
Seniors 70 years and over, this day is for you!  The kind folks at Terry Peak want to show you how much they appreciate your years of patronage.  They're going to start the day with a simple Slope-Side Poker Run, then treat you to a complimentary lunch and then challenge you with a Terry Peak Trivia Contest.  Join them for this fun relaxed day with your peers. WINTERFEST SNOWBASH LAUNCH PARTY: Starting at 5:00 PM / All-in-One Event Center
$5 Admission Fee. Sweet & Spicy (chili and dessert) Cook-off (registration form here), Snow Princesses and Snow Princes Contest Winner announced (more information here), Main Street Window Decoration Winners announced (registration form here).

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26th

NIGHT TUBING: 5:00 – 8:00 PM / Zero Gravity Tubing Park
Come to Deer Mountain from 5pm-8pm for a thrilling ride down the Zero Gravity’s Tube Park lanes! You read that right! Night tubing, DJ Music, and all the thrills you know so well at Deer Mountain. But there is also a new phenomena happening at the Zero Gravity Tube Park! They are going to take you to the COSMOS and you are not going to want to go home! Cost is $28+ tax per person for a three hour session. Enjoy the full service Ski Pub and Ski Cafe.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIVIA – WINTERFEST SPECIAL: 6:30 PM / Lewies Saloon and Eatery
A trivia game featuring live hosts and questions on a variety of subjects. The game starts around 6:30pm and takes about two hours. Come out and enjoy some warm company in the Fun Room!

WINTERFEST FORMAL BALL: 8:00 PM / All-in-One Event Center
$15 Single or $30 Couple Admission Fee – Fundraiser for Prom 2016. Music provided by Orion and Stacey Potter of the Potter family. Appetizers will be offered during the evening. For more information, contact Gary Linn at 605-717-3899.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27th

RIDERS CUP: Starting at 8:30 AM (Registration), 11:00 AM (Race) / Terry Peak
$25.00 Team Registration Fee. A fun team race for the whole family! Teams must have three members, with at least one female and/or one male. Teams are encouraged to name their team… and to dress the part! Prizes for highest scores as well as door prizes. Get more information here.

SNOWMOBILE POKER RUN: Starting at 9:00 AM / Steel Wheel Trading Post
$20.00 Registration fee for 5 cards, 5 card stud. The participants have 4.5 hours to return to the designated ending point: this is now a race! Your time between stops does not matter, enjoy the ride and stay safe! The best poker hand wins: cash prizes will be awarded the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place hands. Awards take place at the Claim Jumpers at 2:00 pm; participants must be present to receive any winnings! SNOW JAM POINTS SERIES 2016 – LEAD EVENT: Starting at 9:00 AM / Lead Country Club
Cross Country Ski open class 10K (9:00 AM), Snowshoe 10K (9:00 AM), Fat Tire Bike Hare Scramble, 1 hour race plus 1 lap (10:00 AM). All races will have men’s and women’s classes.

GEOCACHING EVENT – LEAD-WINTER GEO-GATHERING: 9:00 – 10:00 AM / Lotus Up Café
Geocaching aficionados are invited to gather at the Lotus Up Cafe for coffee and conversation. Several caches will be released that day as part of the Winterfest. More information and the event page can be found on geocaching.com

NEMO 500 OUTHOUSE RACES AND CHILI COOK-OFF CONTEST: 10:00 (Registration), 1:00 PM (Race) / Nemo Guest Ranch
Put together a team and build a racing outhouse, or cook some chili! Otherwise, please come as a spectator and vote in the chili cook-off contest. It’s going to be a blast! Proceeds provide support for the NAJA Shrine Kid’s Transportation. More information and the registration form can be found at nemo500.com

FREE SNOWSHOEING: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM / Englewood Trailhead
The Black Hills Trails Office invite you to discover snowshoeing or to explore the Mickelson Trail in a new way during their activity at the Englewood Trailhead. Access fee to the trails waived for the day! More information at 605-584-3896.

UGLY SWEATER RUN: Starting at 1:00 PM / Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center
$15 Registration Fee. Break out that super dope 1983 sweater that was ugly even then and join us for the funkiest 5K of the Year! Rock that ugly sweater with your closest friends for a jog around Lead for this event in support of local youth at the Boys & Girls Club of Lead-Deadwood. MUSIC SERIES – SCRAPPIEST BAND IN THE MOTHERLAND, FEAT. RANDY MCALLISTER: 3:30 PM / Dark Horse Saloon at Terry Peak
Randy McAllister, Texas singer, drummer, songwriter and harp player is a rare talent and his styles reflect his diversity: a rootsy, mix of blues, Tex-Mex, gospel, honky tonk, Zydeco and rockabilly with intense, soulful vocals and lots of energy.

MUSIC SERIES – STEVE THORPE AND DON HANEY: 4:00 PM / Stampmill
Live at the Stampmill Music by Local Musicians and Songwriters Steve Thorpe and Don Haney Saturday, February 27th from 4-6, right before the Winterfest Parade.

COMMUNITY SOUP FEED: 4:30 – 7:00 PM / Black Hills Rod & Gun Club
$7 Admission Fee. Feast on many choices of soups, breads and desserts prepared by the members of the Black Hills Rod & Gun Club. More information at 605-584-1617.

PARADE OF LIGHTS, BONFIRE AND FIREWORKS: Starting at 6:00 PM / Main Street Lead
The Parade of Lights will start at Lynn’s Dakotamart and make its way down on Main Street to the Manuel Brothers Park. The bonfire and fireworks will follow immediately after the parade arrives. Alicia is a South Dakota native with family roots in Beresford. She attended Augustana University in Sioux Falls—a year of which she spent studying in Norway and traveling throughout Europe.
