  • Savoring Savoy: The Best of Spearfish Canyon

This time of year, it's pretty easy to see why all eyes are on Spearfish Canyon. Every twist and turn presents a new display of breathtaking canyon walls, peaceful streams that sparkle in the sunlight, and several flowing waterfalls—and all of this is accented by an assortment of colors that pop out from the traditional greens of the forest.

When I drive through Spearfish Canyon during this time of year, I always spend a decent chunk of time at Savoy. This approximate midpoint is where you'll find some of the canyon's most breathtaking features. Located beside the Latchstring Restaurant, you'll discover a short but relatively easy hike that brings you down to Spearfish Falls. At the base of the falls is a new platform that provides a beautiful viewing area to capture stunning photos. If you visit in the near future, you'll probably notice some other platforms that are also in the works.

Up near Spearfish Canyon Lodge, you can choose to hike the easy 2-mile there-and-back path to Roughlock Falls. If you aren't interested in hiking, you can follow the gravel road back to a parking area that is located right beside Roughlock Falls. There are several viewing levels to gain different perspectives of the falls that are all handicap accessible.

If you're looking to incorporate a slightly more challenging hike into your day, don't miss out on the 76 Trail, located just across the road from Spearfish Canyon Lodge. This short hike packs a punch when it comes to its steepness, but it's worth every huff and puff to see the canyon from its incredible vantage point. It's less than a mile to the top, but during my last trek, my FitBit counted 52 flights worth of stairs. Thankfully, there are several benches built along the way that provide the perfect resting points as you make your way to the top.

Outside of the gorgeous natural elements of Savoy, don't miss the beauty of the architecture and charm of both Spearfish Canyon Lodge and the historic Latchstring Inn Restaurant. If you're looking for a relaxing weekend getaway, this is a charming place to recharge your batteries and unwind. The Lodge offers several packages to suit your interests and maximize your stay in Spearfish Canyon.

While it is stunning in every season, fall is hands-down the premier time of year to 'ooh & ahh' at the sensational colors of  Spearfish Canyon!
